19 Year-Old Sloane Stephens Scores Major Upset Over Serena Williams
19 year-old American tennis player Sloane Stephens shocked the world, defeating superstar competitor Serena Williams in the Australian Open Quarterfinals.
Though Stephens is only the 29th seed (while Serena was 3rd), many believe Stephens is the future of the game. She will face top-ranked Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals.
Williams was only two victories away from the so-called “Serena Slam” – holding all four major titles at once.
“It’s nice,” Stephens said, of defeating Williams.
When asked how she would prepare for Azarenka, Stephens replied she would just “do the same thing I’ve been doing” and emphasized the key was “to have fun” on the court.
Stephens checked her phone immediately after the win and said she received 145 text messages. The exuberant teenager said she hoped to get “a lot more Twitter followers” on her (@SloaneTweets) Twitter account. As soon as she won the match, Stephens had around 30,000 followers.
