Following the death of five Dallas police officers and the injury of several others in a shooting, police across the country have been on high alert. However, officers in Baton Rouge, LA., the same city where Alton Sterling was killed, would have their suspicions justified in another heartbreaking tragedy.

This past Sunday morning, a man named Gavin Long ambushed and killed two Baton Rouge police officers and a sheriff’s deputy, according to CNN. Long was later killed after taking part in a gun battle with other officers. 

The three victims have been identified, either through family or police sources, as officers Montrell Jackson, Matthew Gerald and Brad Garafola.

“We are disgusted by the despicable act of violence today that resulted in the shooting deaths of members of the Baton Rouge law enforcement,” said Quinyetta McMillon, the mother of Alton Sterling’s son Cameron in a statement through her lawyer. “My family is heartbroken for the officers and their families. … We reject violence of any kind directed at members of law enforcement or citizens.”

“My hope is that one day soon we can come together and find solutions to the very important issues facing our nation rather than continuing to hurt one another.”

Long, a native of Kansas City, MO, was in Baton Rouge with other people, but it isn’t yet clear if they were aware of his intentions or not.

Authorities found that he had a history of posting messages on social media under the name “Cosmo Setepenra,” which he used to show support for Micah Johnson, the man responsible for the Dallas shooting.

The 29-year-old assault rifle-wielding gunman was a former marine who was reportedly discharged in 2010 with the rank of sergeant.

In one of his last YouTube videos posted on July 10, Long made a call for “fighting back” against oppressors and justified violence and bloodshed as a necessary part of revolution.

“Let’s just go with the numbers. Let’s go with history” he said. “100 percent of revolutions of victims fighting their oppressors, from victims fighting their bullies. 100 percent have been successful through fighting back; through bloodshed. Zero have been successful just over simply protesting. It doesn’t – it has never worked and it never will.”
