We’ve covered Cam Newton extensively. More specifically, we’ve covered the racism that’s specifically targeted him as an outwardly confident black man on one of the world’s grandest stages. We’ve also looked at how that means that he can’t be too emotional because it may make the wrong people uncomfortable.

Now we’re going to talk about Cam Newton’s amnesia.

After one of the most impressive individual seasons a football player has ever had, Cam Newton appears to be focusing on making things different this time around after falling short of his championship dreams in rather embarrassing fashion. But, instead of focusing on what he can do on the field to make that happen, he’s decided to renege on his stance on racism.

Just this past January, Newton sat down in front of a room full of media personnel and said, “”I’m an African-American quarterback that scares people because they haven’t seen nothing that they can compare me to.”

That was mostly true, if we’re being honest. But what does the reigning NFL MVP think now, just half a year later?

“It’s not racism. Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion,” he responded when GQ asked him if he feels football fans are racist towards him.

To clarify whether or not he’s really sipping the “post-racial America” Kool-Aid, he then said:

“I’ll let you be the judge. I don’t look at it like that. I look at it like some people have certain beliefs, and I have my own belief, and we can agree to disagree on certain things. But this is what makes sports so amazing, that we can start a discussion around a table, in the newspaper, in the magazines, that will get people’s attention. And that’s what sports does.”

Maybe Cam’s just blacked out everything bad that happened too him last season, like the veiled criticisms of being “unprofessional” and letters written by angry soccer mom’s.

In a time where athletes are placing themselves in front of problems that line up with race on a regular basis, Newton’s decision to step directly away from it is even more jarring.
