The region-wide search for Stephens took place after he fatally shot Robert Godwin, 87, and claimed that he’d killed more than a dozen other people in videos he uploaded to Facebook.
In the days following the murder, Godwin’s children publicly forgave Stephens.
“Each one of us forgives the killer, the murderer,” said Godwin’s daughter Tonya Godwin Baines.
When CNN reached out to Brenda Haymon, another of Godwin’s daughters, she commented on Stephens’ taking his own life.
“All I can say is that I wish he had gone down in a hail of one hundred bullets,” Haymon said. “I wish it had gone down like that instead of him shooting himself.”
