While many people may not pay enough attention to notice, there’s an alarmingly growing trend of transgender people being murdered in the United States. In 2015, the record-breaking number reached 21. Deeniquia Dodds, 22, makes 15 in 2016 and it’s only July.

Dodds, a resident of Washington D.C., was attacked and shot in the neck on July 4th just a few blocks from her home, according to NBC. She was later taken to a local hospital where she was placed on life support before passing away this past Wednesday.

“Her murder reminds us all of how often the transgender community is targeted for violence in our society,” said LGBT rights activist Earline Budd in a statement.

Authorities are yet to have released any information on the suspect or a potential motive, but the attack isn’t currently being investigated as a hate crime.

“We have no information to suggest the crime was motivated by hate, at this point,” Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

Joeann Lewis, who raised Dodds, and other members of her family urged acceptance of people that identify as transgender in the world around them to prevent these horrible acts from occurring.

“Regardless of what their sexuality is, they are human beings just like we are,” Lewis said.

Lewis reportedly said that she and family members were concerned for Dodds’ safety due to her work as a prostitute.

“Whoever did it, I hope that justice be done to them,” she continued.

Dodds funeral will be held during the week of July 25th.
