Some people completely miss the point of what Black Lives Matter looks to accomplish. Former Republican Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, is officially one of those people.

This past Sunday, he appeared on CBS’ Face the Nation to claim that the responsibility for repairing the relationships between black citizens and police departments falls on black parents.

“There’s too much violence in the black community,” Giuliani said, according to The Washington Post. “If you want to deal with this on the black side, you’ve got to teach your children to be respectful to the police, and you’ve got to teach your children that the real danger to them is not the police, the real danger to them 99 out of 100 times … are other black kids who are going to kill them. That’s the way they’re going to die.”

The former mayor came under fire for using these blatantly incorrect statistics and the problematic thinking that supports them, but furthered his criticisms this morning on FOX News by going as far as to call Black Lives Mater “inherently racist,” according to CNN.

“It’s inherently racist because, number one, it divides us. … All lives matter: White lives, black lives, all lives,” he said. “Number two: Black Lives Matter never protests when every 14 hours somebody is killed in Chicago, probably 70-80% of the time (by) a black person. Where are they then? Where are they when a young black child is killed?”

Luckily, Giuliani hasn’t been in office for 15 years. But he still holds influence that could unfortunately sway many into the wrong direction on this political issue. The one that history will look back on with nothing but disappointment.
