This story has been told multiple times now, with the only changes being the name of the officer walking away free and the total number of others that have done the same. The fourth officer involved in the death of Freddie Gray has gone to trial. Three of them have been acquitted while one resulted in a mistrial.

Lt. Brian Rice, the highest ranked officer involved in the case, has been cleared of all charges, including manslaughter, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office, according to WBAL-TV.

“Now that the criminal case has come to an end, Lt. Rice will face an administrative review by the Police Department,” said Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in a statement. “This has been a very difficult time for our city and I thank the community for their patience during this time and ask their continued respect for the judicial process as we move forward.”

Rice was reportedly acquitted because prosecutors failed to show that officers’ decision to not place Gray in a seatbelt while in the back of a police vehicle was criminal in intent and not just unwise.

The next step will be for Rice to go before an administrative board to review his actions.
