A gay all-male dance team’s participation in an annual Christmas parade has some Alabama residents up in arms. The Prancing Elites of Mobile, lined up just like other parading groups, but the attention the group received was less than welcoming.

From Al.com:

Within hours, members of the community in Semmes called parade organizers and posted on social media, most of them in shock. At least one woman demanded an apology, saying she had “never been so insulted” in her life. Others wrote that they were disgusted and children should not have been exposed to the dancers.

The group dances in a style called J-Setting, one that is comprised of cheerleading-style sharp movements. The style has historically been performed by women since the 1970s, but some men started performing the style of dance in the mid-1990s.

The Prancing Elites first started in 2004 as a 10-member ensemble with a demanding performance schedule. Members said they wanted to join dance squads, but were never allowed. The group has appeared on various nationally syndicated media shows such as daytime television’s “The Real” and “The Tom Joyner Morning Show.”
