Although the results of the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards aren’t in yet, history has been made. This year a record eight black stars have received nominations in major categories for the awards.

In 2007, five black actors were nominated for a Golden Globe: Jennifer Hudson, Forrest Whitaker, Eddie Murphy, Beyoncé Knowles and Will Smith.

Idris Elba, Chewitel Ejiofor and Barkhad Abdi all received a nomination for best actor in a drama, Lupita Nyong’o was nominated for best supporting actress, Steve McQueen has potential to walk home with a best director award and John Riley for best screenplay.

Idris Elba has an additional nomination under his belt. He’s up for a globe in the category of best actor in a mini-series or motion picture made for television for his role in the crime drama Luther.

For television, Scandal superstar Kerry Washington received a nomination for best actress in a television drama series and Don Cheadle received a best actor nomination for his role in the comedy House of Lies.

Comedians Amy Poehler and Tiny Fay will host the awards which will broadcast live on NBC Jan 12.
