Jessica Williams Leaving ‘The Daily Show’, To Get Own Comedy Central Pilot
Jessica Williams joined Comedy Central’s The Daily Show in 2012 as the youngest person to do so at only 22 years old. After quickly becoming a fan favorite correspondent over the past four years, Williams has announced her departure from the show.
But she won’t be leaving Comedy Central entirely. Instead, she’ll be getting her own show that focuses on the life of a “woke” young black woman navigating life in her 20’s. According to the exclusive interview with EW, Williams will be writing, producing and starring in the half-hour sitcom series.
“I’ve had this idea for a while about a young woman who is a feminist and who imagines herself to be “woke.” I think that a lot of the time, we have this idea that when you are, like, “woke” — and pleasealways put this in quotations! — that you should always have your shit together,” Williams said. “But I know that often for me, as a black woman of color, I feel like I’m supposed to represent these ideals and values that I was taught as a young lady. Like I’m supposed to carry myself in a special type of way, but oftentimes I’m, like… I’m still in my 20s, and still kind of a mess. So it’s a show about somebody in their 20s who has all these social ideas, but still does not have it together. [Pauses] And she’s, like, goofy and silly and funny!”
She also went on to mention finishing up her first season of 2 Dope Queens, which is a podcast she runs with her comedy partner Phoebe Robinson, and where she’d like to see that go.
The sadness I have for Jessica leaving is only eclipsed by the joy I have for her starting her new show,” current Daily Showhost Trevor Noah said in an email. “If her podcast is anything to go by, it’s going to be an exciting show!”
Williams is sure to move on to great things. She’s already left a lasting legacy on late night television after just 40 years and she’s not even close to being 30 yet. If this doesn’t make you feel like you have to work harder, nothing will.
