Kendrick Lamar saw a lot of success since releasing “To Pimp a Butterfly” like debuting at the top of the Billboard 200 Chart, being ranked as the best album of 2015 by publications like Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Pitchfork Media, and most notably, the album was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Rap Album at the 58th Grammy Awards. Commercially, the album had sold 750,000 copies by the end of 2015.

And while the commercial success is amazing, nothing compares to going to the White House to talk with President Obama.

The video shows Lamar in the Oval Office talking about the Pay It Forward campaign, which is a young mentorship initiative under MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, which highlights mentorship opportunities for underprivileged youth. The video also talks about “My Brother’s Keeper” which is the White House’s youth empowerment focused program.

In the video, Kendrick reflected on where he is today, in terms of what he wants to do with his community.

“I look at where I’m at today and realize that most of my success is owed to the mentors that was in my life. I sat down with President Barack Obama and shared the same views. Topics concerning the inner cities, the problems, the solutions, and furthermore embracing the youth, both being aware that mentoring saves lives.”

This visit comes as no surprise to anyone as President Obama said that his favorite song of 2015 was Kendrick’s “How Much A Dollar Cost.” The President’s Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett further discussed the visit from the Compton emcee on Buzzfeed’s Another Round podcast.

“He was at the White House. He came and he visited the president, and you know what the president said to him? [Because] he was a little nervous — bless his heart, he’s really a very nice young man, and the president said, “Can you believe that we’re both sitting in this Oval Office?”

2015 was a phenomenal year for both Kendrick and Obama, and hopefully 2016 is no different.
