Kidd Creole, born Nathaniel Glover, has been arrested on a charge of murder, according to NBC New York

Glover, 57, was arrested early Wednesday for stabbing a homeless man after the two got into a verbal confrontation in midtown Manhattan around midnight on Tuesday. Glover ended up stabbing the homeless man in the chest. The New York Daily News reports that Glover thought the man, who was identified as John Jolly, was hitting on him.

“He turned, interpreting that the guy was making an advance toward him,” a said. “One thing led to another, and he shivved him twice in the chest.”

Glover is known to many as one of the founding members of the pioneering hip-hop group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. The group was one of the first to create the musical genre from their South Bronx neighborhood and can cite their classic song, “The Message,” as one of the first hip-hop hits.

First responders first thought Jolly was laying on the ground due to the heat, but then noticed the stab wounds in his chest. He was later taken to a hospital where he died.
