The man who fired a gunshot at George Zimmerman following a road rage incident in May 2015 has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Matthew Apperson, 37, a Florida jury found him guilty of attempted second-degree murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle and aggravated assault.

According to New York Daily News, 20 years is the minimum mandatory sentence for firing a gun at another person.

Apperson claimed that he was in fear for his life given Zimmerman’s history of shooting Trayvon Martin in 2012 and continuously bragging about doing so in the years that followed. Zimmerman claimed that he never showed a weapon and that Apperson appeared to be happy when he thought he’d shot him, when, in fact, he’d only shot out his passenger window.

“I am disgusted that our justice system has become so unjust,” said Lisa Apperson, Matthew’s wife.

Both men claimed that the other initiated the road rage incident and confrontation, which was reportedly their second after having another in 2014. Neither pressed charges for this first altercation.

“The crux here is Mr. Apperson’s blatant disregard for my life, any life,” Zimmerman told the judge.

The irony of Zimmerman’s words aren’t lost on any of the people that feel that the self-proclaimed neighborhood watchman practically got off for murder after profiling and following a young black man based simply on his own racial bias.
