Mitt Romney’s Adopted Black Grandson’s Name Translates ‘Dark’
Many were shocked at news of former GOP Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney’s adopted black grandson, but now folks are talking about the origin of the child’s name.
Kieran James Romney became Mitt and Ann’s 22nd grandchild. The governor leaked the news by posting a picture on Twitter last Friday.
The child, adopted by his son Ben and wife Andelynne, is black. The circumstances of his adoption are unknown. Critics have been quick to note that the boy’s name, Kieran, means “black” in Gaelic.“Kieran” is common name in Ireland, and though it does mean “black” or “dark,” it usually denotes a link to Fergus, King of Ulster, a figure in Irish legend. The name descends from “Ciar,” one of Fergus’s sons, who is said to have given birth to the Ciarraige, a medieval Irish people who gave their name to County Kerry.
What an interesting situation.
