More LGBT African Americans turning to Kwanzaa for holidays
While the holidays are a time for family and friends to get together, the season can also be difficult and exclusionary for members of the black LGBT community.
Due to the alienation, more LGBT African Americans are turning to the holiday of Kwanzaa.
“Organizational or chosen family Kwanzaa gatherings have special significance for those in our community who don’t have access to gatherings in their families of origin because of distance, homophobia or exclusion,” explains Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs, co-founder of the Mobile Homecoming Project.
Kwanzaa, the brainchild of Dr. Maulana Karenga, was created as a way to reconnect Black Americans to their African roots by building community. Black LGBT Americans are disproportionately affected by disparity, but somehow continue to build resilience.
The holiday is celebrated from Dec. 26-Jan. 1.
