Last year, Ahmed Mohamed was handcuffed in the office of his Dallas-area high school after he was suspected of making a homemade explosive device. The reality was that he was just a really smart kid who built a clock that happened to go to school with some really racist, paranoid people.

Now, Mohamed and his family have plans to sue both the school district and the city after going through the experience, according to Reuters

The suit was filed on Ahmed’s behalf by his father against Irving Independent School District and the city of Irving with a claim that his son’s religion was a major factor in his arrest.

While the intelligent then-14-year-old was instantly the subject of debate, with the hashtag #I’mWithAhmed moving forward, his life changed drastically later on.

After being admitted into the Qatar Foundation to study at its Young Innovators Program, he and his family moved across the globe. Mohamed returned to the U.S. a few weeks ago for summer vacation, but will be going back to Qatar after having his life uprooted and receiving death threats.

“I lost my home, I lost my creativity. I used to love building things but now I can’t,” he said at a news conference. “I’ve lost my security.”

Previously, Mohamed’s family looked to sue the city of Irving and the school district for a total of $15 million. The proposed amount in this current lawsuit is yet to be disclosed.
