The National Museum of African Art has received the largest donation in its history. Oman, a country of 4 million located on the southwest coast of the Arabian Peninsula, donated $1.8 million to the museum.

The gift announced Wednesday will fund a series of programs called “Connecting the Gems of the Indian Ocean: From Oman to East Africa.”┬áIt will focus on Omani arts and culture and the links between cultures in East and North Africa and the Middle East.

Curators of the museum hailed the gift as a significant milestone. The National Museum of African Art will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.
