According to NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, anyone who has criticized the city’s “Stop and Frisk” program is encouraging a “lawless mayhem state.”

Bloomberg blasted supporters of legislation that would appoint an Inspector General to monitor the NYPD.

He says the legislation is nothing but politics, and that the media is simply fanning the flames of a potential disaster.

From the Huffington Post:

“Make no mistake, this is a dangerous piece of legislation and anyone who supports it is courting disaster,” Bloomberg said, addressing a crowd of dozens of uniformed police officers on the second floor of police headquarters.

“If you end street stops looking for guns, there will be more guns on the streets, and more people will be killed. It’s that simple.”

Bloomberg also took aim at the New York City’s media, in particular the New York Times, for turning a blind eye to the victims of the city’s gun violence, even as their editorial board criticized stop-and-frisk.

Meanwhile, according to the NYCLU (whom Bloomberg has called extremists), the program is ineffective and racist.

It targets black and Latino men between the ages of 14-24. This demographic is just 4.7% of the city’s population, yet they account for 41.6% of stops in 2011. 90% of these men were innocent.

In fact, there were 168,126 searches of black males between the ages of 14-24; this number exceeds the total population of black men aged 14-24 in New York City in general.
