Betty Shelby, the Tulsa Oklahoma Police officer who shot Terence Crutcher last week, has been charged with felony manslaughter in the first degree, according to CNN

Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler told reporters that Shelby’s decision to shoot Crutcher will be examined in the court of law.

“We reviewed the facts of the allegations, it is our responsibility to determine if the filing of a criminal charge is justified under the law,” Kurnzweiler said.

Crutcher, 40, was shot just after holding his hands in the air and walking away from officers with their guns drawn. As he appears to place his hands on his vehicle, Shelby fired four shots that would lead to his death. To the common viewer of the incident, Crutcher was doing everything that he should’ve been.

Shelby’s attorney stated that arrangements are being made for her to turn herself in after a warrant for her arrest has been filed.

The following steps of the trial will surely remain a part of the national discussion, regardless of the decision. It will either be yet another instance of police going unpunished for taking black life with no justification or a rare example of them being held accountable.
