The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is yet again requesting that the President end the rather silly Thanksgiving tradition of turkey pardoning. In the letter, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said the act trivializes the mass slaughter of a gentle animal. But that’s not all. Newkirk went on to liken turkeys to people of color, women, and those who identify as LGBT[Q]:

“You understand so well that African-Americans, women, and members of the LGBT community have been poorly served throughout history, and now I am asking you to consider other living beings who are ridiculed, belittled, and treated as if their sentience, feelings, and very natures count for nothing,” Newkirk wrote in the letter.

This is not PETA’s first attempt to liken the animal of the moment to marginalized groups of people. The organization famously sued Sea World and equated the whales kept at the park to slaves, going as far as claiming that keeping the whales in captivity was a violation of the 13th Amendment.

Indeed, the horrendous treatment of many animals people subsequently eat is an issue that needs to be addressed. But employing analogies to folks who have and continue to struggle seems a bit too much.

Has PETA–yet again–crossed the line? Do you see their point? Do you find their tactics effective? Offensive? Sound off below!!!!
