It’s only March, but so far it’s been a good year for continuing the conversation of the representation of Black women in the media. For a quick recap, Mya Taylor was the first transgender woman to win a major award. Then, a misinformed and unwoke writer tried to come for #Blackgirlmagic, but no one was having it. We’re not even half way through the year and the celebration of Black women is in full swing, and in one week, the Black Girls Rock! Annual Awards Show returns with Tracee Ellis Ross as host.

Why Macklemore beat your favorite rapper

First, I’d like to start by saying that I do not think Macklemore is better than Kendrick Lamar. Other than “Thrift Shop” and “Same Love,” not much happening on his debut album in my opinion. But where Kendrick and other artists who probably should have been awarded GRAMMYs lacked, Macklemore gladly picked up the ball.

History made: highest number of Black actor nominations in Golden Globe Awards this year

Although the results of the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards aren’t in yet, history has been made. This year a record eight black stars have received nominations in major categories for the awards.

In 2007, five black actors were nominated for a Golden Globe: Jennifer Hudson, Forrest Whitaker, Eddie Murphy, Beyoncé Knowles and Will Smith.

BET founder Robert L. Johnson to receive highest form of recognition in media

Black Entertainment Television (BET) Founder Robert L. Johnson will be inducted into the 2013 Giants of Broadcasting Honors, an annual distinction established by the Library of American Broadcasting.

The award is the highest award recognition in media.

In 1991, under Mr. Johnson’s leadership, BET became the first African American-owned company publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2001, Mr. Johnson sold BET to Viacom and remained the Chief Executive Officer through 2006. Today, Mr. Johnson owns or holds interests in business operations that include automotive, hotel real estate investment, financial services, sports and entertainment.
