No, We Can’t Recover From Donald Trump

This article was originally posted on Water Cooler Convos.

This past Sunday, a New York Times article asked, “How Can We Ever Recover From Donald Trump?” The inquiry and subsequent piece posit that Donald Trump’s run for the presidency has uniquely and catastrophically tarnished American politics, that he made nativism mainstream, and has the “bigots emboldened.” But, the fact is: we won’t ever recover from Donald Trump because he isn’t the problem. We are.

We might do well to look at popular children’s fiction for an explanation why.

Eric Holder: ‘systematic racism far more harmful than racist outburst’

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told graduates during a commencement address at Morgan State University that subtle, everyday racism within the criminal justice system especially, is far more harmful than racist outbursts.

He used examples such as those by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling and Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy. He referred to the remarks made by the men as “occasional, jarring reminders of discrimination–and the isolated, repugnant, racist views–that in some places have yet to be overcome,” but are only a chip of the actual problem.

Texas Public Schools are Teaching Students That Black People are “Descendants of Ham”

According to a recent report by the Texas Freedom Network Education Fund, several public schools in the state are quietly teaching students a literal, right wing interpretation of the Bible.

Classes purporting to focus on the Bible’s impact on history are in fact evangelizing children with a literal interpretation of the Bible; namely, that the Earth is 6,000 years old, Judaism is a “flawed and incomplete religion,” and Black people are descendants of Ham.

Some courses are essentially a means by which students are indoctrinated with the tenets and ideology of the Religious Right.

Pastor Withdraws From Inaugural Ceremony Over Anti-Gay Remarks

A pastor set to deliver the inaugural benediction at the Obama Inauguration this month has withdrawn over anti-gay remarks he made in the mid-90s.

Atlanta’s Pastor Louis Giglio once advocated for ex-gay therapy and spoken out against the “homosexual lifestyle.”

He also invoked a biblical passage often interpreted to require gay people to be executed and argued that homosexuals choose to be gay.

George Zimmerman, Neighborhood Watch Captain Who Killed Trayvon Martin, Has VIOLENT History

According to the Huffington Post, the family of 17 year-old Trayvon Martin were lied to by police regarding to violent past of 28 year-old neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman.

Initially, the Martin family were told that Zimmerman had not been arrested for the shooting because  his “squeaky clean” criminal record bolstered his claim that the shooting took place in self defense.

Not so, says family attorney Benjamin Crump. Zimmerman’s record is anything but squeaky clean; in 2005 Orange County police charged Zimmerman with resisting arrest with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer. These charges were later dropped.

Trayvon Martin, on the other hand, had no criminal record  at all.
