We are sad to report that Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of Malcolm X was killed in Mexico City, Mexico.

The Amsterdam News has learned, and the U.S. Embasy has confirmed, that Malcolm Shabazz – son of Malcolm X, was killed on early Thursday morning, May 9, 2013. He died from injuries sustained after he was thrown off a building as he was being robbed in Tijuana.

The League of Young Voters Launch #NoGunsAllowed Campaign

The League of Young Voters have launched a campaign to pay tribute to all those we’ve lost to gun violence, and inspire this generation to break the cycle of violence and put the guns down.

Inspired by Snoop Lion’s recent single “No Guns Allowed,” the League is asking individuals to send in videos, photos, and writings that reflect upon the impact of gun violence.

These submissions will then be compiled and featured in their upcoming #NoGunsAllowed webseries.

Mothers of Young Men Slain by NYPD Call on Artists to Submit Songs for Justice

The Justice Committee – an organization that combats police abuse and violence – has released a video featuring mothers of young men killed by the NYPD.

The brave women call on musicians to write and submit lyrics or original songs that call for justice for their families.

Dubbed Mothers Cry for Justice, the video also announces a day of action at the NYPD headquarters on May 10th.

House Honors Four Little Girls Killed in Birmingham Church Bombing

The four young victims of the infamous 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama are one step closer to being awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’ highest civilian honor.

The House voted unanimously to posthumously award Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, Cynthia Wesley and Denise McNair with the honor. The measure now moves to the Senate.

Robertson, Wesley, McNair, and Collins were killed after a bomb – planted by white supremacists – exploded on the morning of Sunday, September 15, 1963.

NYPD Claims Man Killed Himself by Running into Stopped Police Car, Contradicting Earlier Report

Last year, 27 year-old Brooklyn resident Tamon Robinson was killed after being chased by a police cruiser.

In a police report filed a week after the incident, it is clearly stated that the police vehicle hit Robinson.

But now, despite multiple eye witness stories and the initial police report; the NYPD has made an about-face, claiming that Robinson killed himself by running into a stopped police car:

Many Feared Dead, Dozens Injured After MASSIVE Explosion at Texas Plant

A massive explosion at a fertilizer plant in a small Texas town has left an unknown number of people dead and dozens injured, and leveled homes and buildings blocks away.

The explosion occurred around 8pm in a community near Waco, TX. According to CBS, the explosion could be heard 45 miles away.

While its still unknown exactly how many people have perished, it pretty clear that hundreds of people have been impacted by this tragedy.

Stories from survivors are absolutely horrifying.

Chicago Youth on Gun Violence: “It Feels Like We’re in a World War”

Middle school student Mercedes Austin recently penned a passionate editorial for Essence Magazine, sharing her thoughts on the gun violence crisis in her hometown of Chicago.

According to Mercedes, violence is like a disease, perpetuated and passed on from person to person through feelings of fear, anger, and vengeance.

As this crisis continues, Mercedes finds it hard to believe that anything will ever change.
