Afeni Shakur Davis, former Black Panther, music entrepreneur, and the mother of the late rap legend Tupac Shakur, has passed at 69 years old.
Tomorrow, June 16, would have marked Tupac’s 41st birthday had he not been tragically shot in 1997.
Dedicated to Lakeesha Malone and Kim Jackson
This past Sunday Dr. Dre and Snoop Doog achieved an impossible: they brought Tupac Shakur back to life! Using hologram technology, the musicians have awakened a level of consciousness that many would argue died with Tupac. However, the performance at Coachella 2012 is not merely an extension of Tupac’s legacy, but changes the reality of life and death.
I have a hard time placing Tupac Shakur into a box. Like many intelligent young men, he seems to have struggled a lot with marrying the reality of his world with the ideas that he may have learned from the adults in his life. Was it hypocrisy or human nature? Who knows? Unfortunately, he was taken from us before his true legacy had time to manifest and all we’re left with are pieces of the multiple personas he constructed: poet, thug, rapper, actor, and dare I say intellectual.
