Kayla, 19, and Keonna Davis, 21, are making local history with their new business venture. The two sisters have become the youngest owners of a beauty-supply-store in California, according to the Root.

For many, beauty-supply stores are visited frequently. The fact that you can find one on almost any major street in black neighborhoods is testament enough to that. But it doesn’t take long to realize that many of them aren’t under black ownership even though a large portion of their business focused on the black community.

That’s why what the Davis sisters have done with KD Haircare Supply is so special. Not only is it an example of young entrepreneurship, but it’s also an example of a black-owned business serving its own community.

“Talking to my mom, she was like: ‘Stop stressing about it and begging these people for a job and create your own business,‘” Kayla said to CBS Los Angeles.

Moreno Valley, Ca. is reportedly one of the toughest places in the country to get a job.

“You’re very tired at the end of he day. But it’s very much worth it because it’s your own store,” Keonna added. “You’re your own boss. You can make the rules and dictate what you want to do about it.”

“The community has been extremely supportive,” the two said in an email to The Root. “It’s like we’ve gained another family! Everyone we’ve [come] across has been very proud of us and inspired by us. Overall, we are very grateful.”
