The University of Pennsylvania’s English Department announced that it would replace a picture of William Shakespeare with one of a more representative writer. But that was a few years ago, and the picture of Shakespeare remained untouched. So the students decided to do something about it themselves.

Students reportedly removed the picture of Shakespeare from Fisher- Bennett Hall, took it to the department chair’s office and replaced it with one of black queer feminist writer Audre Lorde, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian.

“Students removed the Shakespeare portrait and delivered it to my office as a way of affirming their commitment to a more inclusive mission for the English department,” said English professor and department Chair Jed Esty.

Faculty is reportedly supportive of the students’ actions ad say that the picture of Lorde will remain while they search for a more permanent replacement.
