Everyone is freaking out after Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner of the Miss Universe pageant on Sunday evening. This is probably the first time that ever happened. This year was also the first time a contestant wore dreadlocks in the Miss World competition. Suffice it to say, it was an exciting weekend in the pageant world.

In the gaffe (literally) heard ’round the world, Steve Harvey – host of the 2015 Miss Universe pageant – brought up Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia. Then he named Miss Columbia the winner. A few moments later, he told the audience that he made a mistake. He told Miss Philippines to take her rightful place as winner. He was very apologetic and took responsibility. He even teared up while apologizing asking the audience, “Please don’t hold it against the ladies, please don’t.”

There was another first this Saturday in the Miss World pageant. For the first time ever in the pageant’s history, a women rocked dreadlocks. It was Miss Jamaica, Dr. Sanneta Myrie, who took fifth place. Black women everywhere cried tears of joy while saying, “it’s about time”.

Even though the Miss World pageant aims to celebrate beauty from every continent, the majority of the winners have been women with fair skin and silky hair. The only time that an African woman won the Miss World title occurred in 2001. That year, Agbani Darego from Nigeria took the crown. She wore her hair in a bun. 14 years later with Dr. Myrie, another step toward diversifying beauty was made. Dreadlocks, a style that Giuliana Rancic said made Zendaya look like she smelled of patchouli or weed, was finally viewed for what it was–beautiful.

In all, pageants seem to be pretty standard. But, these events show that they can also be very exciting and surprising.
