What I Hope to See At the 2016 NAACP Image Awards
So, tonight’s the night of the NAACP Image Awards.
I don’t know about you, but it’ll be refreshing to see a host of black people in one place that isn’t about protesting…oh wait, yes, it will be. We’re protesting the lack of diversity and Hollywood racism tonight, so it’s time to get it on and popping tonight.
Before I tell you what I want to see, hope to see, and expect to see, let’s just take a moment of silence for the fact that the Oscars missed out on nominating some tremendous actors and actresses including Creed star Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler and Beasts of No Nation actor Idris Elba.
It’s so important that someone is recognizing the work that we put out year after year, so salute to you, NAACP. You’re the realest.
Entertainer of the Year
First of all, I’m thinking that the Entertainer of the Year award is going to either Michael B. Jordan or Shonda Rhimes. The former, for a number of reasons, his filmography is undoubtedly on point, and the ladies love him… hence the name Michael Bae Jordan! Did you see him in Creed? Breathtaking. And Shonda Rhimes? She’s a visionary and a creative (who I’m expecting to meet in the next few years.) Her work has transcended race, class, and is surpassing boundaries on television, so yes, we see you.
Outstanding Motion Picture
I don’t know, y’all. I actually don’t know. I mean, Creed was… wow, but Dope made some very strong points and stood tall amongst Black culture, but Straight Outta Compton made historical headlines. I guess I’d have to chose Straight Outta Compton.
Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture
Michael B. Jordan… next?
Outstanding Comedy Series
I have to go for “Key & Peele.” It’s just too good to be true. That show makes me want to holler at every turn. Although “Survivor’s Remorse” is funny…in a way that it probably shouldn’t be.
Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Anderson. Done.
Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series
Why is Wendy Raquel Robinson even on this list? It’s been slow for “The Game” since it left CW11. I’ll choose Gina Rodriguez because “Jane the Virgin” is 1) on The CW (where “The Game” should’ve stayed) and 2) features a Latina and I’m here for the diversity.
Outstanding Drama Series
If “Power” doesn’t win… you can have the rest of the award show. Keep it along with your bad judgment.
Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series
…seriously? Omari Hardwick has this one on lock… well, I’m crossing my fingers for this.
Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series
Now, I’m a little torn here. As much as I love Mary Jane, I’m also inspired by Cookie and excited to see Annalise Keating in everything that she does. Can I skip this one? Yeah, I think I’m going to skip this one, this is hard.
Now, of Viola Davis, Idris Elba, David Oyelowo, or Ryan Coogler, I hope one of them takes me to church with an acceptance speech worthy of a standing ovation. I always looking forward to hearing one of them speak. I get so inspired to do good, make a name for myself, and I get so excited to place myself in the same category as them.
I’m excited for tonight, and I hope you are, too. Let’s see if my predictions are correct.
Watch the show tonight at 9/8c on TVOne. You can live tweet it with us at @BlackYouthProj using #ImageAwards.
