storm

A giant storm of snow, sleet and freezing rain on the East Coast has resulted in 21 deaths. The storm, which struck states on Wednesday night, brought 9 inches of snow in Washington, 10 inches in New York and Maine tallied to more than a foot.

From U.S. News & World Report:

In New York City, Min Lin, 36, died after getting hit by a snow plow in Brooklyn, but her nearly full-term baby was delivered via cesarean section. The 6 pound, 6 ounce baby was in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman told Fox News.

Most of the other fatalities came from traffic accidents as drivers braved the brutal conditions. Cities up and down the coast grinded to a halt as the snow piled up. Washington received about 9 inches of snow, New York got 10 inches and parts of Maine tallied more than 1 foot.

In the South, more than 500,000 people remained without power as of Friday morning, following the storm’s initial damage, which coated power lines and trees with thick ice.
