Yara Shahidi, the Black-ish actress and soon-to-be star of her own spin-off, is headed to Harvard College this fall. While her character is headed to the fictional California University of Liberal Arts, Shahidi will be on the other side of the country.

“I committed to Harvard and I’m really excited!” Shahidi told ET in an interview.

Shahidi also shared her decision in an Instagram post wearing a crimson hoodie with a caption quoting the late James Baldwin.

“The paradox of education is precisely this – that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated.” ~ James Baldwin #CrimsonPride

While Shahidi is clearly a stellar young woman who Harvard would be happy to have as a student, it surely didn’t hurt that she got a letter of recommendation from former First Lady Michelle Obama. Obama’s oldest daughter, Malia, will also be starting classes at Harvard in the fall after taking a year off.

Much like their characters in the show, Anthony Anderson admit that he was hoping Shahidi would stay closer to Los Angeles.

“I was kind of rooting for Cal State Fullerton. I wanted to keep her close,” he said.

“It’s art imitating life imitating art!” Shahidi told ET about the similaries between her character on Black-ish and her own life. “Zoey and I are very different people and so I’m respecting that. And I hope that we just see growth from her. There are moments where her inner Yara comes out and my inner Zoey comes out. I really can’t promise anything.”
