Remember when Zendaya got cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming as a character named Michelle and, even though we had absolutely no idea who in the world Michelle was, we celebrated because this was a huge deal? Well, it turns out that whole Michelle thing was just a red herring, according to the Wrap.

Zendaya will be playing none other than Mary Jane Watson!

Any hardcore or casual fan of Peter Parker’s mythos knows how extremely important MJ is, as she’s one of his most significant love interests, if not the most important. In some versions of the story, they even go on to get married and start a family together. Instead of going the Gwen Stacy route or focusing on one of Peter’s other love interests from over the years, Sony and Marvel appear to be taking us straight to the point.

While some traditionalist fans are sure to be upset that MJ won’t be played by a white red-headed woman, many of us are ecstatic that Marvel is taking a chance on switching things up by casting a young black woman to play her. Given the importance of Spider-Man’s character and the young ages of Tom Holland and Zendaya, it’s safe to say that we’ll see a lot of them going forward.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to be released on July 7, 2017.
