5-year-old allegedly punched in face by school teacher
The mother of a 5-year-old Memphis, Tennessee child says her daughter was punched in the face by her kindergarten teacher.
Tiffany McConnell, says her daughter Payton was punched by her teacher after requesting to use the bathroom for a second time.
“My daughter said she was crying and screaming because she wanted to come home with me, her mother, and the teacher got mad because she wanted to go to the restroom again,” said Tiffany McConnell, Payden McConnell’s mother, “She had just let the restroom and she wanted to use the restroom again and the teacher got made and pushed her down and punched her.”
Tiffany said she noticed her daughter’s eye was puffy after school Aug. 5 but thought she had been crying.
“The next day she woke up and had a black eye,” said Tiffany, adding she then immediately reported the incident to the principal.
Shelby County Schools released a statement saying, “The District is investigating these allegations, and the teacher has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.”
Tiffany Told WHBQ the school principal called her Monday, “And said that nothing really came up and I told her I was going to further investigate, and she called me 20 minutes later and told me one of the students…she had forgot to tell me that one of the students said the teacher pushed my daughter down.”
Tiffany, who says she was told not to file a police report since the incident happened on a school campus by a Memphis Police Officer, filed a report on Tuesday.
The report will not be available to the public until the investigation is complete because a child is involved. Tiffany says she has no plans of taking her child back to the school.
