Actor Wendell Pierce – famous for roles in The Wire and Treme – is giving back to his hometown of New Orleans by opening a chain of grocery stores dubbed Sterling Farms in food deserts across the city.

Customers are treated to quality customer service; patrons are even offered rides home if they spend over $50.

Pierce was able to launch Sterling Farms with assistance from a program called the Fresh Foods Initiative, which offers a low-interest loan program and use of federal block grants for supermaarkets and food retailers across the city.

From Techyville:

The most important thing to me is creating a relationship with the community; creating an economic engine as an opportunity for them just to have access to a decent grocery store,” Pierce says.

What a great and vital endeavor.

Kudos to Mr. Pierce for investing in something that genuinely enriches his community.
