An autopsy revealed that Mario Woods, 26, who was killed by San Francisco police in December, was shot a total of 20 times, including several times in the back and once in the face, according to ABC7. Part of the incident was caught on cell phone video and shared on social media.

Woods reportedly encountered police after stabbing someone with a knife. Police claim Woods refused to drop the knife after several orders, the use of pepper spray and being shot with bean bags.

According to the San Francisco medical examiner, Woods also had multiple drugs in his system including methamphetamine, marijuana, anti-depressants and cough syrup.

“You try and talk to that person and talk them down or give them space to bring them under control without unleashing the kind of devastating barrage of shots,” said John Burris, a civil rights attorney representing the Woods family.

San Francisco police are standing firm behind the belief that they did all they could to deescalate the situation and were just doing their jobs.

“The report speaks for itself. It shows he had methamphetamine in his system which would help explain the behavior — the alleged stabbing of a stranger and his refusal to drop the knife,” said the San Francisco Police Officers Association.

Mario Woods’ death has sparked controversy and protests due to claims of excessive force on behalf of the officers. Some of the dancers involved in BeyoncĂ©’s Super Bowl halftime performance were captured in a picture holding a sign that read “Justice 4 Mario Woods.”

These new revelations are sure to add fuel to the public response as things move forward.
