‘Black-ish’ In Early Talks For Spinoff Starring Yara Shahidi
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that ABC is in early talks to create a spin-off from Black-ish. The series would star Yara Shahidi, who plays the oldest child in the Johnson family, and tell of her experiences going to college.
The series would be developed under Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and Larry Wilmore, who was showrunner for the first 13 episodes.
Many sitcoms have attempted spinoffs with different family members as they go on to new chapters of their lives. Some have worked while a larger portion haven’t ended as well.
But there appears to be quite a lot of optimism for a series that would follow Zoey Johnson as she moves on. Which would be much better than seeing her reduced to a recurring role on the show as she’s become a fan favorite in its 3 seasons.
Barris and Wilmore, who recently signed an overall production deal with ABC, are also working on a second pilot for a sitcom starring Courtney B. Vance and Felicity Huffman entitled Libby & Malcolm.
