The history of racism in golf clubs is a long and rich one – just watch The Legend of Bagger Vance to get an idea of how unwelcome people of color were. Many of the sports founding fathers were outwardly racist (and sexist) and the culture surrounding it didn’t transform for quite a while.

So it must have been quite a sight when a group of more than 60 Black Lives Matter protesters walked into Donald Trump’s Rancho Palos Verdes golf club on the morning of Christmas Eve to put on a performance of their own.

But the group didn’t exactly sing Christmas carols. Instead, they sang “Protest carols,” which were sung in the tune of traditional Christmas classics with new lyrics that support black lives and called out the President-elect for his many false statements.

LAist reported that the group sang for about 15 minutes and were actually applauded by a majority of onlookers, while some were clearly bothered by the display.

The carolers then exited the clubhouse to be met by Sheriff’s deputies. A source at the scene clarified that members of the National Lawyers Guild, however there’s been no update on if any arrests or other police action occurred.

The public demonstration reportedly continued outside until around 1 p.m. when the protesters left.

This display serves as an example of the many different forms that protest and organizing can take to have a number of effects. To say the least, it was original and incredibly creative.
