Last week, Justin Carr, 26, made his way to the streets of downtown Charlotte to join in the protests over Keith Scott’s fatal shooting by police. He reportedly just wanted to make his grandmother proud, by marching in a protest similar to how she did with Dr. King.

“ ‘I just want to come down here and help out,’” Vivian Carr, Justin’s mother, said he told her, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Unfortunately, Carr was shot in the head that night and passed away approximately a day later while in the hospital. Soon after, Rayquan Borum, 21, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and being a fugitive from another state. He later confessed to the shooting.

Carr, who was expecting his first child to be born in October, unfortunately won’t be here to teach his child just how important it is to fight for freedom. Hopefully, as we continue this work, we can honor his legacy.
