David Clarke has long been an annoyance of social justice and civil rights advocates during his tenure as Milwaukee County Sheriff. Well, as of 11:59 on August 31, he’s no longer in that position.

“After almost 40 years serving the great people of Milwaukee County, I have chosen to retire to pursue other opportunities,” Clarke said in a statement later Thursday, according to the New York Times. “I will have news about my next steps in the very near future.”

CNN obtained a copy of Clarke’s official resignation letter but wasn’t able to reach out to him for comment. The former sheriff is known for being a vocal conservative and Trump supporter who reached the national stage following the latest election cycle. Meanwhile, four people died in local jails because of poor conditions and a clear lack of leadership.

No one is sure what’s next for President* Trump’s go-to black/police correspondent [two-for-one special?], but there’s surely something in line. Maybe that job with theHomeland Security Department he claimed he was offered back in May but never actually started is still waiting for him.
