George Zimmerman Will NOT Use ‘Stand Your Ground’ Defense at Trial
At a hearing today, George Zimmerman’s defense team stated they would not be using the “Stand Your Ground” defense at the upcoming Trayvon Martin murder trial.
Zimmerman will claim self-defense instead.
His team has decided not to utilize the two weeks set aside for a separate “Stand Your Ground” hearing in April. They’re skipping straight to the trial, which begins in June 2013.
Zimmerman’s team is also keen on delving into the background of Trayvon Martin’s girlfriend, who was on the phone with him during the altercation with Zimmerman.
She is the prosecution’s star witness.
Attorneys were also in court to hear the judge’s decision on whether or not they would be allowed to access the medical records of the state’s most important witness, the young lady Trayvon was speaking with on the phone before he was fatally shot.
However, defense lawyer Don West made a startling claim shortly after the hearing began: The state had revealed, before the hearing, that there are no medical records.
The woman, the defense lawyer said, “misrepresented” in a sworn statement that she missed Trayvon’s funeral because she had been hospitalized.
“In fact, she lied,” West said.
Thoughts on the George Zimmerman trial? What do you think the outcome will be?
Does Zimmerman have a better shot at being acquitted by claiming self defense?
