High School basketball players suspended for throwing up 3-pt. symbols
Two Wisconsin high schoolers have been suspended after a picture of them throwing up a three-point symbol surfaced.
Jamal and Juwaun Jackson were featured in The Sheboygan Falls News. The story was about the brothers moving into the district. They, along with Sheboygan Falls Senior Jordan Jackson, took one serious picture and a goofy picture.
“I did it like every other kid does it when they make a 3,” said Sheboygan Falls Senior, Jordan Jackson. It’s the brothers’ pose that got them in trouble.[…]”When you make a three, everyone does this sign. You’ve probably seen LeBron James or someone do it. I did the three in the picture, and my little brother pointed at the camera,” The Sheboygan Falls Superintendent would not go on-camera but says parents complained it looked like gang symbols. The school even asked the police department to look into the signs.
Now the two brothers have to sit out of the team’s upcoming game against rival Plymouth on Friday.
The school’s superintendent told TMJ 4 that her main concern is making sure every student feels safe at school. She says some of the schools did not feel safe because of the picture.
Is this more of a diversity issue? How much of a role are stereotypes playing in the school’s decision?
