Janelle Monae Finishes Out Leading Trio In ‘Hidden Figures’
“Hidden Figures,” a film about the three black female NASA employees that helped send the first American into orbit in 1972, has just cast its final member of the leading trio – Janelle Monae.
The Fox 2000 film already cast Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, but, according to the Wrap, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae have also been cast to play Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson.
While this is Monae’s first role in a major studio film, it’s not first time in front of the camera, after just wrapping up “Moonlight,” which was produced by Brad Pitt’s company and tells the story of a young man coming into adulthood among Miami’s “War on Drugs” era, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“Hidden Figures” is based off of Margot Lee Shetterly’s “Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race,” which is slated for a September release through HarperCollins.
