Charles Everett Brownlow Jr. is in custody after killing five people in his hometown of Terrell, Texas.

Police say that Brownlow Jr. went on a shooting spree that spanned six hours, and claimed the lives of his mother and aunt.

From CNN:

The chaos began around 5 p.m. Monday with reports of a gunshot victim. Police arrived to find a dead woman — later determined to be Belinda Walker, Terrell’s 55-year-old aunt — with at least one bullet wound to the head.About a half hour later, a firefighter noticed that a nearby home was on fire. These flames were quickly extinguished, and authorities found another woman’s body. This was Charles Brownlow’s house, and the victim was Mary Brownlow, his 61-year-old mother.

After determining that the two deaths were related, investigators sought out Charles Brownlow’s Ford Focus. More gunshots were reported during the search in the town, with a report of another shooting coming in around 10:30 p.m.

Police found 33-year-old Jason Wooden and 30-year-old Kelleye Sluder shot dead. Both victims were acquaintances of Brownlow. A few minutes later, 22-year-old Luis Gerardo Leal-Carillo was found slain at a market where Brownlow was spotted. He was found around 1:30 a.m., hiding in a creek early Tuesday and was taken into custody without incident.

As tragic as the events were, the police department says that it could have been much worse if they had not located Brownslow Jr. when they did.

Our condolences go our to the family of those slain.
