Petition started to replace Confederate statue with sculpture of Missy Elliot
With the nationwide campaign to remove Confederate monuments growing in popularity, different strategies are coming to the forefront. Most statues are just being removed as quickly as possible with no future plans announced for the spots where they once rested. A resident of Portsmouth, Va. may have come up with a great idea.
According to WTKR, Nathan Coflin of Portsmouth has started a Change.org petition to replace a Confederate statue with a celebrity the city can proudly claim as its own – Missy Elliott.

“Getting this statue put up will be a lot of work and you may ask yourself is it worth it?” Coflin wrote on the Change.org page. “I say yes and ask you to join me in letting us work it. Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it.”
As of this writing, the petition has more than 23,000 supporters. Coffin plans to send the petition to the city’s mayor, vice mayor and multiple council members to consider the idea.
Whose to say that multi-platinum rappers and producers can’t be used as beacons of the community? If this idea goes any further, what Missy image should be immortalized? I personally vote we go with the iconic black trash bag look from the “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” video.

Black Youth Project Readers:
Respectfully, concerning the above topic, “Petition started to replace Confederate statue with sculpture of Missy Elliot.”
I opine the following:
1. One thing at a time.
2. Stay focused on The Main Issue. To wit: The taking down of every Slavery, Racist, Treasonous Confederate Statute, Flag, etc. on every Federal Building, Property, etc. in our Great Country of America. The Main Issue IS NOT with whom or what to replace it.
3. Again, respectfully: Why bring up a Separate Topic even before the Victory is Won of taking down every Racist Confederate symbol of Slavery in America – Land of the Free and Home of the Brave!?
I Totally Reject This Side Issue for Now (which has the potential of being divisive) of who or what should replace the taken down statutes!
The following Haiku Poem of my position. I follow the traditional Japanese format: 1) No title, 2) Exactly 17 syllables total; 3) Three segments and 4) A 5-7-5 syllables, segments ratio.
One thing at a Time;
First Win taking down Statues
Then with whom Replace!
