Last week, something Trumpian must have sparked a race between major publications to put out the most fucked up writings on the topic of slavery. On Tuesday, The New York Times compared Saartje Baartman–an enslaved Black woman who, in addition to the many other horrors she suffered both before and after her death, was forced […]

The City of New Orleans has scheduled the removal of 4 Confederate statues this week. As someone who grew up in the south, I applaud this effort to rid the Southern landscape of celebratory markers of a dark past that continues to haunt Black and white Americans. This has been a long time coming.

Many of the most well-respected institutions in the United States have a history deeply connected to slavery. Harvard University, which many consider to be the pinnacle of higher education, has taken a commendable step towards a better future by acknowledging its own connections to slavery.

By: Kelvin L. Easiley, Jr. Where does one seek solace when faith fails? A new book called A Birthday Cake for […]

It’s always the moments of fellowship within Black communities that get trampled on by mainstream media outlets and White folks. This time, Elle.com just got a Black woman to do their dirty work in a new article called, “Here’s My Problem With #BlackGirlMagic.” But don’t be fooled, this attempted undermining of the popular statement isn’t […]

According to the first-ever Global Slavery Index 2013, more than 29 million people are living in slavery around the world. The index, released by Australia-based Walk Free Foundation, takes a look at modern slavery: debt bondage, forced marriage, child labour, human trafficking and forced labor.

For years, we’ve seen letters claiming to be written by white, racist members of society who have the system of slavery. We may no longer be in chains, but we cannot deny the fact that in many ways, black people remain in bondage. The latest letter on keeping the black race inferior is one that […]
