I’ll always be the “angry” and “unreasonable” Black student when I call out racism on my campus
by Indigo During my first semester of law school, I struggled with acclamation into legal academia, but being at an institution invested in public interest lawyering, I shrugged it all of. Then, the racial tensions within my first-year cohort at my University exploded after several of my colleagues complaining to Academic Affairs about our only […]
Virginity and hymen myths must be challenged to protect Black teens like Deyjah Harris
This essay contains discussions of sexual coercion & violation, as well as invasion of sexual/medical privacy I used to go to church when I was in college. Not because I wanted to, but because I felt obligated to. I grew up in “the church”—of the Southern, Black Non-denominational Christian variety, and I hadn’t yet escaped […]
It’s not just We Got Y’all: When non-profits frame Black youth as deprived & in need of saviors

The documentary is touted on the official website as an exploration of “the pivotal role” historically […]

Who Brought Colonialism to the Party?
Dedicated to the girl with the red beret. To dissing me for writing about celebrities lately. Rumor goes that, in Chicago, they shut down the predominantly Black/Latin@ bus routes early to keep us away from the white spaces. Route 80-Ashland, Route 70-Division, just to name a couple, make it hard to experience the nightlife of […]
A Misguided Attempt to Empower: Deborrah Cooper’s Lonely Black Church Woman Blames Black Women for their Singleness
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wO4yZg0I_S4&feature=related I am single black church woman. I go to church on Sunday morning because I need to hear a word from God. I need to know that there is hope in the world. I need to know that when “my body is ailing” as the old folks say and my childhood traumas—daddy beating momma—keep […]
