Straight black men dominate the rap industry. Surprise! But to what extent does this male-dominated field marginalize other groups from entering into this lucrative industry? While the industry has made some room for empowered, tough black women- Nicki Minaj, Azealia Banks, Angel Haze, to name a few- one group has been marginalized almost entirely: gay […]

Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare”- Audre Lorde. As journalists, bloggers, and online media haters salivate at the chance to discredit Kanye’s contributions to music, fashion, and society by minimizing his body of work to pure narcissistic drivel, he continues to redefine what Black self-love looks like in public spaces.

This week the Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. To be clear: Do I think this decision will help black youth directly? No. Am I happy as hell that  blatant and intentional bigotry rooted in homophobia, sexism, and religious radicalism is finally legally recognized as wrong in my country? Hell Yes. This is not […]

I was wrong. Really wrong. Wrong as LL and Brad Paisley’s solution for solving racism (aka Obama’s Race Speech: The Musical). Wrong as my desire to hear Stacey Dash on that remix. I got it wrong. Really wrong. Last year around this time, I predicted that Notre Dame’s Skylar Diggins would more than likely be […]

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ccx7xYBArBc Over the past few weeks, the conversation around Black masculinity has been particularly invigorated in several ways. From Frank Ocean’s coming out to Lupe Fiasco’s shedding tears on thinking of the violence in Chicago, we’ve seen Black men produce profound moments of emotion—in a society where the showing of emotion is often positioned as […]

I’ve spent the last week treading in the liquid of a queer-flavored ambivalence, trying to determine why the Anderson Cooper and Frank Ocean coming out announcements mean less to me than other people. I have seen enough episodes of Coming Out Stories and foolishly subjected myself and my partner to the awkward anti-climax of telling my father […]

If I could take all my parts with me when I go somewhere, and not have to say to one of them, “No, you stay home tonight, you won’t be welcome,” because Im going to an all white party where I can be gay, but not Black. Or I’m going to a Black […]

While it should be commonplace to study, promote, and protect Black History each and every day of the year, I still find it rewarding to dig into our history during the month of February to highlight those of our predecessors, especially the lesser know ones, to […]

And, so we begin as most stories start, Once upon a time not too long ago . . . “Life can only be understood backward, but it must be lived forward.” Soren Kierkegaard For me, this quote speaks of many known and unknown joys and pains. It is a quote that my godmother faithfully […]

The OCCUPY WALL STREET Movement Is Heating UP! Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but there are huge protests going on in NYC. Aiming for worldwide participation, Occupy Wall Street has attracted hostile media attention, outright police violence, and support from celebrities like Susan Sarandon and Michael Moore. The movement is in its 12th day, and it’s […]

In my 21 years of existence there have been many things that have perplexed me: Mike Tyson’s face tattoo, why Trix are for kids, and who framed Roger Rabbit. However, Christine O’Donnell’s interview on the Piers Morgan show may take the cake as one of the weirdest things I’ve seen. O’Donnell, already known as a […]

So last week, the black blogosphere was ablaze about Fox News’ objection to rapper, Common’s appearance at the White House for an evening of poetry.  (I blame spoken word’s roach-like ability to last so long on something incredibly jacked up I must have done in a former life.)  Calling the “controversial” rapper “vile,” the right […]
