Teacher who told student ‘We do not need another black president’ to fight complaint
An Ohio high school teacher accused of making a racist remark to a black student will fight the complaint.
Gil Voigt, who teaches at Fairfield Freshman School, has requested a hearing to defend himself against the accusations.
According to officials in the Butler County school district, Voigt told a black male student, who had professed his desire to follow President Barack Obama as U.S. president, “We do not need another black president.” Nearby students also reported hearing the comment, according to a Fairfield assistant superintendent who conducted a review of the allegation.
Voigt says that his statement was misquoted by the student, who Vhe describes as troublesome in class. He told Fairfield officials that he said, “I think we can’t afford another president like Obama, whether he’s black or white.”
Voigt remains on unpaid suspension and will be represented by an attorney from the Ohio Education Association at a hearing set for Jan. 27.
Do you believe Voigt? Or is this an example of him trying to cover up his tracks?
Is the newly revised statement acceptable?
