In 2010 there were nearly 8,775 murders with guns in the country, compared with just 51 in the UK.

But police responding to the shooting of unarmed Trayvon Martin, 17, six weeks ago were unaware that the case would cause an earthquake of controversy across the country.

The cracks created have burst apart delicate racial divisions and sparked the worst racial tensions seen in the US for 20 years.”
