Trump fires FBI Director James Comey because he can apparently do that
FBI Director James Comey was in the Los Angeles bureau when he got the news he was let go. He was speaking to staff members when televisions throughout the office started broadcasting that he had been fired by the president. The New York Times reports that he initially laughed it off before finding out it wasn’t a prank.
In regards to exactly why Comey was fired, President Trump claims that he was defending his investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails leading up to the election. Many feel that this lead to a last-minute hit to the polls that kept her from winning in November. Clinton herself has said as much.
“While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau,” Trump wrote in a letter.
Political analysts and politicians from both sides of the aisle are citing a different reason for Comey’s termination. It is suspected that Comey was fired because he was investigating the President’s advisers and any connections they may have had with the Russian government.
“I’ve spent the last several hours trying to find an acceptable rationale for the timing of Comey’s firing,” Senator Jeff Flake Arizona (R), said on Twitter. “I just can’t do it.”
How dare Comey do his job?
Not only is it shocking that Trump is able to fire the people investigating his staff, but it’s incredibly suspicious that he actually follow through with it. The New York Times reports that the only other time the president has fired the FBI Director was in 1993 when President Clinton fired William S. Sessions.
Whispers of cover ups have been turned up to murmurs as it appears the president is doing all he can to make himself invulnerable to criticism and investigation. The thought of what the Trump administration could do without any accountability is concerning, to say the least. Especially considering that he met with a Russian Foreign Minister the very next day.
This administration is going to give us some great books when its done. You know, if we’re still allowed to read.
