Quintonio LeGrier called 911 three times on Dec. 26. His first two calls were ignored by dispatchers, even though he claimed his life was in danger. After the third , dispatchers sent Officer Robert Rialmo to the scene where he would shoot and kill LeGrier and a neighbor named Bettie Jones.

The first two dispatchers who chose to not send police to the scene have been suspended by the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, according to The Chicago Tribune.

The first call taker was given a three-day suspension without pay for not sending a car after LeGrier’s first call at 4:18 a.m. call. The second was given a one-day suspension for the second call at 4:20 a.m.

LeGrier’s third call at 4:21 a.m. is the one that lead to someone sending police to the scene. His father also made a call at 4:24 a.m. claiming that his son was attempting to break into his bedroom with a baseball bat. The same bat Rialmo claims LeGrier was threatening him with before he shot him.

While these suspensions are only temporary punishments for actions that have permanently altered the LeGrier family and ended a young man’s life, they do hold the dispatchers responsible for their unresponsiveness.
